This factory custom was sold from 1971 through 1979, and at first glance, it doesn’t look that special. It wasn’t the first Halrey, nor was it the MoCo’s most technologically advanced machine. Instead, what made it special was its influence on how bikes were marketed, styled, and sold across the industry.

The Super Glide produces 98 horsepower and 120 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheel via a six-speed manual gearbox coupled to a final belt drive system. The engine has a compression ratio of 10.3:1 and a claimed fuel efficiency rating of 47 MPG. The result is a Harley that can do about 230 miles between gas stops, thanks to its five-gallon fuel tank.
Complemented With A Rugged Yet Versatile Chassis

It is underpinned by a seasoned Softail steel double-cradle chassis shared among many existing Softail models. This motorcycle uses lighter materials to help keep curb weight in check. It is suspended on 49 mm telescopic forks up front and the famed hidden Softail rear suspension, which comprises a preload-adjustable monoshock.
Grip is provided by road-focused tires wrapped around 19-inch front and 16-inch rear laced wheels, which also contribute to its quintessential cruiser-bike stance. Braking is handled by a single 300 mm disc coupled to a four-piston fixed front caliper. The rear gets a single 292 mm disc coupled to a two-piston floating caliper.

The only other motorcycle that evokes a similar nostalgic appeal is the Indian Chief Vintage. This cruiser revives 1940s American motorcycle styling, replicating the mid-century Chief models. It gets deep valanced fenders, wire-spoke wheels, and the signature illuminated front fender headdress.
Powering this Chief is an old-school-inspired air-cooled Thunderstroke 116 V-twin producing 120 pound-feet of torque. Its pullback handlebars and floating solo seat also add a custom touch. However, the new Harley Super Glide’s exclusivity and lower price give it an edge over the $19,999 Chief Vintage.
