Who remembers playing the original Tomb Raider on the Sega Saturn back in 1996? Well, anyone wanting to relive those 32-bit raiding glory days with modern, up-to-date technology, can do so thanks to OpenLara!

OpenLara is an open source engine being developed by Timur Gagiev (aka XProger) that enhances the original Tomb Raider game with; realistic water shaders, reflections, moveable camera w/ mouse,  first-person view, slow motion mode, dual-aiming, dynamic lighting and real-time shadows!

Are you excited yet? Demos of Tomb Raider’s first level and training level (The Caves & Lara’s Mansion) are both playable in your internet browser via the WebGL build available here. Press “H” on your keypad during gameplay to list controls.

To play other levels, you’ll need the Windows PC version of Tomb Raider (1996) to access the /DATA folder—either a physical or digital copy will do. All you have to do is click the “browse level” option in the WebGL build linked above.  Also, you can access those levels by using a PlayStation disc. Xproger is considering Saturn disc compatibility as well.

OpenLara is cross-platform. Windows, MacOS X, Linux, and Web browsers are currently supported—mobile support is in the works too! To build and compile yourself the source code is available here.

For more information, check out XProgers official website at: https://github.com/XProger

Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation HD is a fan-made remastering of Core Design’s fourth Tomb Raider sequel originally released in 1999 for Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Windows. Many regard TR: TLR as Core Design’s swan song and the best sequel since the 1996 original. TR:TLR was ported to Sega’s Dreamcast in 2000 with exclusive graphical enhancements.

RaidingTheGlobe, the team behind the project, are currently working with the Official Tomb Raider Level Editor via an unofficial custom-made editor called Tomb Raider Next Generation Level Editor. The team is promising a slew of new features such as; HD textures, HD FMV’s, increased draw distance, restructured 3d models, updated sprites, dynamic fog and shadows.

The TR: TLR HD team has hopes to port the project to OPENLara, an open source engine by XProger that would allow for more advanced graphical effects such as real-time shadows, 60fps, and realistic water shaders.

Also, the team is incorporating a secrets counting system that makes finding the in-game secrets easier. In the original TR: TLR, the amount of secrets wasn’t specified per level, but by total amount in the entire game. The newly implemented secrets counter now tracks all secrets per level.

No specified release date has been announced yet. TR: TLR is stated for a Windows release as a free upgrade so get your digital copy on Steam (it’s on sale until October 3rd!) and relive your Dreamcast tomb raiding days!

Check out the official page for the project at RaidingTheGlobe.

Our friends over at SegaBits received word that a revival, of sorts, regarding Sega’s classic House of the Dead franchise could be in the works. A Nintendo source claims Sega has filed the trademark dubbed, Darts of the Dead.

However, the trademark has been confirmed in English only. As SegaBits states, this isn’t the first time Sega has produced a House of the Dead spin-off. For instance, the popular Typing of the Dead spin-offs have landed on Dreamcast and PC in the past.

Whether this is any indication of a new House of the Dead experience on arcades, mobile, or consoles is unknown. One thing is for certain—expect darts and the undead! If Darts of the Dead is any reminder of Typing of the Dead: Overkill then count me in!

Steamforged Games, the studio behind the official tabletop game based on Dark Souls, announced a collaboration with Capcom and that Resident Evil 2 is coming in board-game form. It’s stated for a Kickstarter campaign sometime this fall. The Dark Souls crossover tabletop game raised about $4.76 million on Kickstarter several months ago.

Capcom had the following to say:

“With the Resident Evil brand being Capcom’s most successful IP of all time, we’re delighted to share our support for this exciting new release and
are looking forward to seeing the end product from Steamforged Games.”

Back in 2000, Capcom and Sega partnered and brought Resident Evil Code: Veronica to the Sega Dreamcast. Shortly after, Capcom ported Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis to Sega’s final console.

On August 12, 2015, Capcom’s producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi announced that a Resident Evil 2 remake was in development, which is expected to release sometime in 2018. The remake will most likely appear on PS4, XONE, and Steam.

For anyone that pre-purchased Sonic Mania for Steam or the PC Collector’s Set you might be upset after Sega delayed the game until the 29th—some of us PC users at Sega Nerds were pretty bummed too. Recently, Sega issued an apology letter and will be offering a free Steam copy of Sonic the Hedgehog (1991). Anyone planning on playing Sonic Mania on PS4, Switch, or XBONE should not worry as the game will release in a couple days as planned.

However, PC players might want to use caution when scrolling through social media because we all know how enthusiastic Sonic fans can get—and boy, have fans been excited for Sonic Mania! Here are some temporary solutions to ease the early birds from spoiling the fun:

  • For Google Chrome users who frequently use YouTube, download Video Blocker and Keyword Blocker. Both will grant you to remove all videos with specific keywords. In our case you might want to temporarily block anything containing ‘Sonic Mania‘.
  • For Firefox users, you might want to check out Firefox Add-on link. You might want to try restoring the classic YouTube layout for it to function properly.
  • For Twitter, you might want to temporarily mute some of the followers that you feel might spoil the fun. For Facebook you will have to briefly use the ‘hide all posts’ option for any groups or pages you follow. Or if you must—maybe deactivate your FB for a couple days.

Of course the staff at Sega Nerds will try our best at putting a [spoilers] caption in any given article that might leak possible spoils. We will do our best to keep the PC players at bay.

Yokosuka, Japan at sunrise

When speaking in context of game content alone—it’s presumed that entries from Konami’s Silent Hill franchise and especially the under-performed Deadly Premonition by Access Games could widely be considered the Twin Peaks (and Shenmue) of gaming. These games allude to some of the themes and artistic aesthetics seen in David Lynch’s television series Twin Peaks.

So how does Yu Suzuki’s Shenmue universe compare to the surreal world of Twin Peaks? For starters, Lynch is well-known for infusing unnerving scenarios and distinctive cinematography into a somewhat illogical fashion—yet entices mystery and beauty at the same time. AM2 and Suzuki planned a very cinematic approach for Shenmue that incorporated themes such as sadness, death, and revenge. In order to achieve those themes and ambitions Suzuki hired screenwriters, playwrights, and film directors. Needless to say, Shenmue is enriched with an atmosphere, sometimes haunting yet calming music, slower-than-life pacing, and strange, slightly overacted dialogue that is very similar to a David Lynch film.

Twin Peaks, Washington

In the small cozy town of Twin Peaks, the residents must overcome the death of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), a beautiful high school student with dark secrets. Like Shenmue, death sets the tone for the entire series of Twin Peaks, with the main difference in Shenmue being that the main protagonist, Ryo Hazuki must overcome and avenge the murder of his father as opposed to solving a murder.

Lynch is no stranger to themes of revenge, which he incorporates into Twin Peaks. For instance, Windom Earle (Kenneth Welsh) is a character in Twin Peaks who seeks revenge on the show’s main protagonist, FBI special agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) for having an affair with his wife. In a series of twisted events, Earle goes bonkers, kills his wife, and attacks Cooper.

“Meanwhile.”

Meanwhile, Earle is fascinated with unlocking the secrets of the Black Lodge, a parallel universe connected to the White Lodge, and bridged by a waiting room aka the “Red Room,” which symbolically serves as a purgatory of sorts. Suzuki introduces the concept of the Phoenix and Dragon mirrors in Shenmue, which is similar to the Black Lodge and White Lodge used in Twin Peaks—all concepts serving as keys to a bigger picture or theme. In Shenmue, the Phoenix and Dragon mirrors must be brought together to revive the Qing Dynasty, which was conquered by revolutionaries such as the Ming Dynasty and eventually the Republic of China.

Furthermore, Shenmue and Twin Peaks attracted a niche audience, which in return developed cult followings. Twin Peaks Season 2 was cancelled in 1991 due to lackluster ratings, but Lynch stayed true to the aforementioned final scene where Laura Palmer famously delivers her final words, “I’ll see you again in 25 years.” Fast forward 25 years later and here we are in 2017 with Twin Peaks: The Return.

It’s no secret Shenmue fans have had to endure a long wait period as well. It’s been nearly 16 years since Shenmue II was released in 2001 on Dreamcast and Xbox. Neither installment met the financial expectations Sega had hoped for, yet the project costed the company $47 to $70 million. Thanks to a Kickstarter in June 2015, Shenmue III was finally able to come to fruition.

In relation, both series ended with cliffhangers that are hopefully set to conclude long awaited closures in the current Twin Peaks: The Return on Showtime and the upcoming Shenmue III in development by YS Net, which is set to release in 2018. Hopefully a 25 year time frame isn’t the case for Shenmue III.

Meanwhile…
