Top Remakes of Vintage Sega Games

The first Sega gaming console was called SG-1000 and hit the market in October 1985. This was not an enormous success for Sega, but great times soon arrived thanks to the development of the Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, also known as the Mega Drive, and Sega Game Gear. Each of these devices were released before 2000 and sit firmly in the retro category.

There were many great titles in the vintage Sega gaming catalogue and Alex Kidd in Miracle World was one of the first to take off in the public domain. For some Sega Master System owners, Alex Kidd in Miracle World was built into the device and the 2D platform game was based on various levels involving puzzles and obstacles. There were many monsters to beat in the game plus three henchmen of Janken the Great and the boss himself. Alex Kidd in Miracle World received critical acclaim upon its release and having been such a popular game, it came as little surprise that a remake was launched in 2021 called Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX.

Available on Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX is based on the original game but offers new levels and the opportunity to play using modern or retro graphics. Having completed the game, two additional gaming modes become available and much like the original version from 80’s, Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX has received many positive reviews.

In 1990, Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse became available on the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive). Minnie Mouse has been captured by the evil witch Mizrabel and it is the job of the player, as Mickey Mouse, to save her. This was the first game in the Illusion video game series and was enjoyed by millions of gamers across the world. There have been several remakes of Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, one in 1998 in Japan for the Sega Saturn and one more recently, in 2013 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, iOS, Windows Phone, Android, and OS X. The latter received a graphics and gameplay update, with many people choosing to play the game on their mobile device.

Perhaps the most famous vintage Sega game to be remade is Sonic the Hedgehog. Ask any Sega console owner to name some of the games they played in the 90’s and Sonic the Hedgehog will be one of them. Sonic the Hedgehog is on a quest to defeat Dr. Robotnik and has the ability to run at supersonic speeds to aid his progress. The main elements of the game are controlled by using one button and Sonic collects rings which function as health. Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the best-selling video games of all time and in 2013 it was remade for the Nintendo 3DS, iOS, and Android. The release on the Nintendo 3DS provided Sonic with a 3D platform plus a Zone Select feature and the classic Spin Dash move.

Some of the other vintage Sega games to be remade include Black Belt, ChuChu Rocket! Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Oratorio Tangram, and Earthworm Jim.
